KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Subaeratus, 28 mm, 16.18 g, 9 h), a contemporary plated imitation. Imitating Babylon, struck under Stamenes or Archon, circa 324/3. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, ear oriented horizontally; below throne, monogram above M. Cf. Price 3610 corr. (for prototype with symbol called 'astragalos'). An interesting and very well made contemporary imitation. Two light scratches on the reverse and with light deposits, otherwise, very fine.
